Jerry Seinfeld accepted an advertising award this week, and most of his acceptance speech was about how much he loves the craft of advertising, in spite of the fact that it’s all about lying and selling a good or service that in no way is as good as the ad is making it out to be.
He was accepting an Honorary Award at the Clios for his advertising work for Acura (so obviously he’s one of these liars he’s speaking of).
Seinfeld said, “I love advertising because I love lying. In advertising, everything is the way you wish it was.” He cracked up the audience as he talked about that brief moment of happiness in between seeing the commercial and actually owning the product in question.
Because once you own it, you know it will suck. Seinfeld explained, “We know that, because we live in the world, and we know that everything stinks. We all believe, ‘Hey, maybe this one won’t stink.’ We are a hopeful species. Stupid but hopeful.”
