‘I Think He Just Thinks It’s an Easy-Peasy Job’: Kids Give First Impressions of Candidates
“I’m guessing he has a lot of ties,” and, “I think his teeth are real clean,” are just two of the opinions held of presidential candidate Bernie Sanders by a group of children ages 6 to 8. The kids were gathered together by the Washington Post and asked to give their first impressions of Sanders, Hillary Clinton, Ted Cruz, and Donald Trump.
They went on to hypothesize that Sanders “likes criminals” and also likes Sesame Street. Regarding Clinton, one of the kids suggested she wouldn’t be a good president because she talked about her granddaughter and the presidency has nothing “to do with bein’ a grandmudder.” One girl interjected that she heard Clinton’s husband had been caught with another woman and yet another prefaced her statement that there have been too many male presidents with a “no offense to boys.”
When it was time to watch Trump, one of the kids said, “oh no,” which would have been funny on its own, but came before something a little more sobering. One boy said matter-of-factly that Trump believes Mexicans are bringing drugs into the country, then got into an argument with a little girl of color, who said she knew Trump doesn’t like black people.
“He likes black people,” the boy said, clearly trying to correct her.
“No,” she said. “He doesn’t.”
“He likes black people; he doesn’t like Latinos,” said the boy.
Another boy piped up, sadly, “I’m Latino…”
To see what else they thought about Trump and Cruz, watch above.
