Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery pulled his team off the floor Tuesday night without shaking hands with the opposing team, North Dakota.
McCaffery was upset that North Dakota tried to score a meaningless basket in the closing seconds of the contest, which Iowa was leading by 11. A North Dakota player stripped the ball from an Iowa player with two seconds remaining, and tried to make one last basket.
The Iowa player was simply holding the ball, and the North Dakota player ripped it from his hands. Often, in similar end of game situations, the trailing team will apply nothing more than token pressure to the ballhandler, content to let the clock run out. That did not occur in this case.
Afterwards, McCaffery explained that he was upset he didn’t want to see one of his players get injured in a meaningless end of game situation.
“I wasn’t pleased with how the game ended, and the things that happened.” McCaffery said. He added, “I was not having it. That’s not the way to play…The game’s over. Move on.
