Jonathan Swan on Roy Moore: ‘If You’ve Lost Hannity, You Are…In a Really Tough Spot’
It appears, for now, that Roy Moore is staying in the Alabama Senate race, despite increasingly loud calls from Republican lawmakers for him to step aside in the wake of multiple allegations that Moore pursued sexual relationships with teenage women while he was in his 30s.
But according to one seasoned observer, it is not the take of those GOP lawmakers which spells doom for the Moore campaign. Rather, it is the harsh criticism of a Fox News personality.
Appearing on Deadline: White House Wednesday, Jonathan Swan of Axios said that Sean Hannity‘s condemnation of Roy Moore — in which the Fox News host called for Moore to “get out” of the race if he could not refute the accusations in 24 hours — is nothing but trouble for the former Alabama Supreme Court Justice.
“If you’ve lost Hannity, you are truly, you know, in a really tough spot,” Swan said. “When you lose Hannity, this is not a good situation.”
Incidentally, Moore may not have fully lost Hannity just yet. On his radio show Wednesday (via Media Matters), the Fox News host said he did privately receive “an answer from the Roy Moore campaign on the questions that I had.”
Nonetheless, fellow Deadline panelist Elise Jordan agreed with Swan, and cited Hannity’s conversation with Moore on his radio show Friday as a primary reason that Hannity and his ilk are bailing on Moore.
“I do think that Sean Hannity has been a game changer here,” Jordan said. “His interview was the most damning evidence against Roy Moore. Conducted by someone who is very trusted among Republican Alabama voters. And he’s given his 24 hours notice, and Roy Moore sure hasn’t done anything to clear his name.”
