As the first female president on HBO’s Veep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Selina Meyer is subject to a lot of Hillary Clinton comparisons, a trend that reached its peak this month when the former secretary of state’s emails were released and looked conspicuously like scripts from the comedy show.
With season four of Veep making its UK debut this week, Louis-Dreyfus spoke to the London Evening Standard and briefly addressed the Clinton parallels.
“The scrutiny that female politicians are put under is pretty intense — that’s why we changed Selina’s hair,” Louis-Dreyfus said of the decision to switch up Meyer’s haircut in season four. “I was keenly aware of the fact that when a woman changes her hair or her look in any way, people just won’t let it go.”
“Hillary Clinton has gotten so much shit for her hairstyles over the years,” she added. “Which is remarkable when you consider what it is she does for a living. But hair, for some reason, is a really big deal.”
Interestingly, Louis-Dreyfus delivered that exact same line to Marie Clare in an interview published this past April. In that piece, she was quoted saying, “I mean, Hillary Clinton has gotten so much shit for her hairstyles over the years. Which is remarkable when you consider what it is she does! But hair, for some reason, is a really big deal.”
Either the actress has that comment down word-for-word or something else fishy is going on.
