Kuwaiti Man Criticized for Naming Son After George Bush

A Kuwaiti man has drawn some ire on social media for naming his son after George H.W. Bush to thank the former president for helping liberate Kuwait after being invaded by Iraq in 1990.

Nayef al-Mutairi told Al-Arabiya News Channel that when his wife got pregnant, he planned to name the child George Bush if it was a boy and Margaret Thatcher if it was a girl. He explained, “This is the least I can do for his efforts to liberate Kuwait and save us.”

Having the name has, unfortunately, led to some pretty harsh online backlash.

Many Arab social media users had criticized the naming of al-Mutairi’s son after the former U.S. President. “A Kuwaiti named his son after George Bush who killed one million Iraqis and destroyed Baghdad,” one Twitter user remarked. “This is the top of mental backwardness,” another reacted.

Al-Mutairi said despite the pushback, his son doesn’t get bothered much, and, in fact, it actually helped to have the name when they were in the U.S. and got pulled over for speeding.
