Law Prof Jonathan Turley: Trump ‘Bears Responsibility’ for Employing Cohen, ‘There’s No Escaping That’

While its an open question whether Donald Trump will be indicted in connection with the charges against Michael Cohen, Jonathan Turley is reminding everyone that the president’s ties to his former personal attorney are undeniable.

The George Washington University Law School professor and Fox News contributor stopped by Outnumbered on Wednesday to discuss Cohen’s three year sentence for shady business dealings, perjury before Congress, and violations of campaign finance law under the orders of his former boss. Turley believes Cohen got a “as good a sentence as he could possibly have hoped for” all things considered, noting Cohen’s “dreadful reputation” as a lawyer and as a “heavy” when he was still in Trump’s employ.

When Melissa Francis asked if Cohen’s legal troubles hold any bearing on the president, Turley brought up the fact that Cohen was in Trump’s inner circle for years, which seems to have been a “mistake” for the president in retrospect.

“The president does bear responsibility here,” Turley said. “He picked Michael Cohen. Michael Cohen never had a good legal repeution. He never had a reputation as someone who was a particularly good lawyer. He was a bit of a thug and the president hired him, and so, there is no escaping that.”

Turley went on to say Cohen’s legal troubles could be increasingly problematic for the White House if it turns out he was still connected with the administration when he lied to Congress. He also said Cohen might’ve hustled the judge today by getting off with a light sentence.
