Lost‘s Promo, And Eight More Television Last Suppers

The creative forces behind the hit television show Lost began to unveil their promotional campaign this week, starting with a stunning image of the show's cast shot in the style of the Last Supper. You know the one: Leonardo da Vinci's 15th century depiction of Jesus announcing that one of his 12 disciples would betray him? If this looks familiar to you (at least in a pop culture sense), it's because you've probably seen this idea before. A bunch of times. 1. Lost Here is the "original" Lost promo. Most interesting is John Locke as the Christ image. Least interesting is that no one is playing the part of Judas, the betrayer of Christ that is looking away in da Vinci's original. Next up, The Sopranos 2. The Sopranos Tony as Christ? Perhaps because he most often used the Lord's name in vain? This was famously shot by Annie Liebovitz, who had the good sense to portray Carmela in the role of Judas. Next: Battlestar Galactica 3. Battlestar Galactica I will admit to never having watched this show. My reaction to this version is that its beautifully lit and I love that the Christ-like figure is wearing a red dress. Hubba, hubba? Next: our favorite cartoon family, The Simpsons 4. The Simpsons Of course Homer is Christ-like - he's another lovable loser! And Barney is the Judas in this depiction - perhaps recalling the rivalry they once had over Springfield's plowing business (Mr. Plow vs The Plow King?) Next: Sesame Street 5. Sesame Street This one is just sort of weird. And lame. The Last Supper connotes tension and imminent betrayal. Sorry Cookie Monster, you are no Judas. Next: Nintendo characters 6. Nintendo characters Wait Donkey Kong as Christ? Princess as the betrayor? Wasn't Donkey Kong holding Princess hostage? Perhaps this version is some sort of meta-commentary, a la Wicked and Wizard of Oz? Next: That 70s Show 7. That 70s Show This was included lest you, dear reader, think that every homage to da Vinci is either well thought out, or well executed. This is neither. Next: Popeye 8. Popeye This one wins the creepy award (though to be honest, I actually didn't know we had a creepy award until I came to this image.) Finally: Northern Exposure 9. Northern Exposure
