Mayor Forced to Apologize After Using Seinfeld Soup Nazi Joke
No Soup Nazi Jokes for you, John Knutsen, Mayor of Puyallup, WA!
The mayor was officially rebuked by the city council for calling one of his staffers the “sign Nazi” while giving a tour to visitor, and the staffer complained. Knutsen explained himself by saying he was referring to the “Soup Nazi” from Seinfeld, ” and wasn’t actually calling the staffer a Nazi. Nevertheless, the staffer said he felt “embarrassed” and “belittled,” according to The News Tribune.
Knutsen’s apology did not prevent the City Council from voting to rebuke him. “We believe it is important to be respectful to City staff and to represent the City with dignity and in a courteous manner to all persons and entities,” they wrote.
Knutsen for his part gets it, in a way:
At Tuesday’s meeting, Knutsen defended his actions. He said he’s learned that “‘Seinfeld’ humor” isn’t allowed, adding that people only find jokes funny if they like the person who’s telling them.
“I did not intend to cause (the employee) any discomfort,” he said.
