Mizzou Professor Offers His Resignation After Backlash for Email to Students

brigham-300x197Amid the tensions at the University of Missouri, one professor found himself under fire for an email he sent out to students about attending class so the bullies don’t win.

According to The Washington Post, professor Dale Brigham sent out a message to his nutritional science class saying, “If you don’t feel safe coming to class, then don’t come to class. I will be there, and there will be an exam administered in our class.”

He continued:

“If you give into bullies, they win. The only way bullies are defeated is by standing up to them. If we cancel the exam, they win; if we go through with it, they lose.

“I know which side I am on,” Brigham said in the e-mail. “You make your own choice.”

There was an uproar among students who didn’t think he was taking their concerns about threats and an unsafe environment seriously. One student last night was arrested for making threats on Yik Yak.

Brigham told WaPo, “Students can come to class and take the exam tomorrow if they wish. My duty is to hold the class. If they choose otherwise, they can take a make up exam.”

However, later in the day, Brigham offered his resignation and admitted he erred, saying, “If my leaders think that my leaving would help, I am all for it. I made a mistake, and I do not want to cause further harm.”

However, it was not accepted:
