If you still have any expectation that President Donald Trump will release his tax returns someday, Steven Mnuchin is basically telling everyone to forget it.
The Treasury Secretary appeared before the White House Press Corps today in order to help unveil the Trump administration’s proposed plans for tax reform. As he took questions on the matter, Mnuchin emphatically told ABC’s Jon Karl that Trump won’t release his tax history.
“The president has no intention — the president has released plenty of information and I think has given more financial disclosure than anybody else,” Mnuchin said. “I think the American population has plenty of information.”
The Trump administration has consistently defended the president’s decision to withhold his taxes since the campaign. In the past, Trump’s staff had issued mixed messages about whether his returns will ever be made available.
Trump is the first president in modern history to not release his tax returns (even though an IRS audit doesn’t forbid him from doing so), and it has become one of his biggest recurring controversies.
It was Karl who also asked Sean Spicer just last week if Trump plans on ever releasing his tax returns.
