Nicole Kidman Explains Her Bizarre Clapping During the Oscars

The Internet was broken nearly beyond repair on Oscars night because of the La La Land flub, but there was another contributing factor: Nicole Kidman‘s incredibly bizarre clapping:

And there’s a lot more where that came from. Now, she’s finally explaining what happened, and it’s actually pretty simple. In an interview with Australian radio show Kyle & Jackie O, she explained, saying it was because she had big expensive jewelry on, and she didn’t want her rings to hit each other. “I was like gosh, I want to clap, I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse, right? ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?'”

She elaborated, saying “So therefore I’m clapping but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own, but it was absolutely gorgeous, and I was terrified of damaging it!”

And, while lots of people were freaking out on Twitter about her “seal-like” clapping, some people got it right away:
