NYT’s Bret Stephens on White House Drama: ‘This Is What a Bad Trip Must Be Like’

Cable news was dominated this morning by the suddenly huge story of White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci seemingly accusing White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus of leaking his financial disclosures to Politico.

We’ve seen a number of twists and turns with this story, including Scaramucci wanting to get the FBI involved, his deletion of the accusatory tweet, the revelation that the disclosure was publicly available and Scaramucci’s insane CNN interview this morning that was called a “car crash” by a senior administration official.

Following that crazed CNN segment, New York Times’ columnist Bret Stephens compared the constant drama coming from the Trump administration to taking hallucinogenic drugs.

Appearing on MSNBC alongside Bloomberg’s Joshua Green — the journalist who reported on the “car crash” comment — Stephens reacted to Green describing the CNN interview as “surreal” and how he didn’t know what was happening.

“This should be called the peyote presidency because it is hallucinogenic all the time,” Stephens noted as host Stephanie Ruhle broke out in laughter. “I’ve never tried peyote but I feel like this is what a bad trip must be like.”

He added that Scaramucci seems to not understand that “to be a public figure means you are a public figure” and that the public is entitled to know certain things.
