Oops? Romney Suggests He’s Middle Class During Miami Town Hall

Earlier today, Mitt Romney told those gathered at a Miami town hall gathering that he favors a tax policy that will help “those who have been hurt by the Obama economy,” and then suggested that he might be one of those suffering.

“That’s the middle class,” he continued. “It’s not those in the low end; it’s certainly not those in the very high end. It’s for the great middle class — the 80 to 90 percent of us in this country.”

Us? According to a Boston Globe analysis from earlier this year, Romney’s net worth falls somewhere between $190 million and $250 million, easily placing him out of the middle class, and, in fact, making him newly subject to Obama’s “Buffett rule.” This recalls the time, earlier this summer and also in Florida, that he told a crowd, “I’m also unemployed.”

What he meant that time was that the only job he wanted was that of president, and what he likely meant to convey today is simply that he understands what the middle class is going through. But in both cases, his ad-libs have left him sounding more than a little out of touch, not unlike the Louisiana Congressman who complained about barely getting by on his $400,000 a year after taxes nor the Wisconsin rep who complained about his $174,000 yearly salary. It’s one thing to not be “one of us” and another to not understand what that might mean. So: Let’s everyone be more careful with our words?
