Vice President Mike Pence is standing behind President Donald Trump even after his Tuesday press conference at Trump Tower which received near-universal condemnation.
Speaking at a news conference in Chile, the Vice President refused to disavow Trump’s Tuesday remarks — instead offering a generic show of support for the Commander in Chief.
“What happened in Charlottesville was a tragedy, and the president has been clear on this tragedy and so have I,” Pence said. “I spoke at length about this heartbreaking situation on Sunday night in Colombia. And I stand with the president, and I stand by those words.”
Pence’s stance doesn’t appear to be in line with many in the Republican party at the moment. A number of prominent Republicans have denounced Trump’s Tuesday comments, including (via CNN); Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and Arizona Sen. John McCain, to name just a few.
But many in the party have remained mum. And now, the nation’s No. 2 has offered his support.
