Phil Mudd Snaps at Rick Santorum in Heated Debate on Gitmo: ‘Excuse Me, Mr. Politician!’

Earlier Wednesday, President Donald Trump railed against the U.S. criminal justice system’s handling of terrorists — calling it a “laughingstock.”

Wednesday night on Anderson Cooper: 360, a former Senator and a former deputy director of the CIA and FBI went at it over Trump’s comments.

During a heated debate, CNN counterterrorism analyst Phil Mudd defended the current system against Trump’s attacks.

“Hundreds and hundreds of prosecutions post-9/11 in federal courts of prisoners,” Mudd said. “High degree of conviction. Speedy trials. Cheaper than Guantanamo. And as you heard today, some of the convictions, including the charges against the individual today, that’s a life or that’s a death. He may face the death penalty.”

Rick Santorum, a former Republican Senator from Pennsylvania, interjected.

“So what’s our ability to gather the intel from them?” Santorum said.

Mudd snapped.

“Excuse me, Mr. Politician!” Mudd said. “The practitioner would like to speak!”

“Go ahead,” Santorum said — before making another quick point anyway. “And by the way, this has political implications.”

The counterterrorism analyst ignored Mr. Politician — and concluded by ripping Trump’s suggestion that might send Saifullo Saipov, the Manhattan terror suspect, to Guantanamo Bay.

“Let me give you, in closing, the comparison and contrast in Guantanamo,” Mudd said. “Fewer than 20 convictions. They take forever. And they cost everything.”
