‘Political Divisiveness Is a Vice’: Stephen Colbert Reflects on Election Takeaways

Stephen Colbert did a lot of reflecting on the 2016 election outcome in an interview today with John Dickerson on Face the Nation.

He admitted that there were four possibilities he and his team planned out for their live election night special, and the one they didn’t prepare much for was a Donald Trump win.

Colbert got candid in talking about what he’s thankful for this year––”we’re all still here,” for one––and he even admitted that the election got him to reflect on the team sports nature of politics:

“It makes me question picking sides because if you look at this like a sport… against your neighbor, you’ll choose anything as a knife against the other side, and that itself is the opposite of a virtue… That’s a vice. Political divisiveness is a vice.”

Dickerson also asked Colbert about the process of writing jokes about Trump.

Colbert said that Trump speaking one way while he “behaves” another way certainly helps…
