Port Authority board member and ethics chairwoman Caren Turner has resigned from her post after going on a rant and cursing out cops over a traffic stop.
Politico obtained camera footage from an incident last month where police pulled over a car in Tenafly, NJ, and Turner’s daughter was one of the four passengers riding inside. The stop was going smoothly at first according to Officer Matthew Savitsky, but things changed after Turner herself arrived on the scene.
Throughout her tirade, Turner requested information from the officers, demanded that they refer to her as “commissioner,” and made several insulting comments. She’s also seen swearing at the cops, calling one officer an “ass” and telling another “you may shut the f*ck up.”
Earlier this week, Port Authority spokesman Ben Branham confirmed that Turner is no longer on the board. Indications also suggest that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was aware of the situation, and his office “encouraged” Turner to hand in her resignation.
“The video speaks for itself,” Branham said. “The conduct was indefensible.”
When reached for comment, Turner told Politico, “This is on me and I take full responsibility for it.”
Beyond her work with Port Authority, Turner is a Democratic lobbyist who used to be an aide for Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 campaign. She has also served on the financial committees for several other Democratic politicians in the NJ-NY area.
