R.E.M. Hits Back at Trump for Sharing Mock-SOTU Video Featuring ‘Everybody Hurts’
President Donald Trump today shared a video made by a Twitter user mocking the looks on Democrats’ faces during his State of the Union address.
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 15, 2019
The video––which, as of this posting, is the president’s pinned tweet––features R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” and the band responded with a brief statement:
World Leader PRETEND!!! Congress, Media–ghost this faker!!! Love, R.E.M.
— R.E.M. HQ (@remhq) February 15, 2019
R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills weighed in separately, even tagging Twitter’s Jack Dorsey:
By the way, @CarpeDonktum, go fuck yourselves.

The assholes @CarpeDonktum created the meme. #PresidentAsshole retweeted it. Measures have been taken to stop it. @jack you need to get on this.

So the meme’s fair use. I LOVE the 1st Amendment! Meme away, folks. But that takes nothing away from what a fraudulent con man @realDonaldTrump is. #WorldLeaderPretend

UPDATE –– 11:25 pm ET: Mills and the Twitter user who made the video ended up having this exchange:
I'm just a dude in my living room making videos that people enjoy. Shall we bury the proverbial hatchet? https://t.co/YcAXxnBJaI
— Carpe Donktum? (@CarpeDonktum) February 16, 2019
Let’s do it. Have fun. Sorry about the asshole part. @CarpeDonktum https://t.co/9PuubYvRkX
— Mike Mills (@m_millsey) February 16, 2019
UPDATE –– 2/16, 10:27 am ET: As of now the video is not available on Trump’s Twitter page and per CNBC, people who tried watching it earlier today saw a message that it was removed “in response to a report from the copyright holder.”
