Republicans Growing More Dismissive of Evolution, Pew Poll Finds
According to a new Pew Research Center poll, the percentage of self-identified Republicans who believe in the theory of evolution has dropped over the last four years by 11 points, widening the partisan gap over the contentious issue which often pits religious faith against scientific reasoning.
The below chart shows how, in 2009, 54 percent of Republicans said they believed in the theory of evolution; but that figure has dropped to 43 percent this year. Meanwhile, in 2009, 64 percent of self-identified Democrats said they believed in the theory; rising to 67 percent this year. The partisan gap in evolutionary belief now stands at 24 points, as opposed to the 10 point gap in 2009:
The Pew study also finds that political independents have grown slightly more skeptical of evolution, going from 67 percent belief in 2009 to 65 percent today. Here are all the results, broken down below by demographics:
