Robert Gates to Yahoo’s Katie Couric: White House ‘Should Look in the Mirror’ Before Attacking Me
Katie Couric made her Yahoo News debut Monday with an in-depth interview with former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, whose new book, Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War has caused a massive stir for its criticisms of the Obama Administration. On the White House’s objections to what he wrote, Gates suggested they “look in the mirror.”
Gates, wearing a neck brace that is the result of a recent fall, pushed back against those who say he should have waiting until President Barack Obama was out of office to write his memoir, or that the overall tone of the book is negative towards the president. He insisted that he did not have and “adversarial relationship” with Obama and that he still has a “lot of admiration” for him.
When Couric pressed Gates to admit that his criticism of Obama was on the strong side, he replied, “For a micromanaging White House, they should go look in the mirror.” He went to explain, “Maybe they ought to think about how they do business. And I think it’s fair to say that the book is a lot more critical about the people around the president than it is of the president.”
