Romney Calls On Rep. Akin To Drop Out Of Senate Race

Following a growing number of similar calls from fellow Republicans, Mitt Romney, too, said Rep. Todd Akin should make his exit from the Senate race in Missouri.

Romney’s campaign released the following statement:

“As I said yesterday, Todd Akin’s comments were offensive and wrong and he should very seriously consider what course would be in the best interest of our country. Today, his fellow Missourians urged him to step aside, and I think he should accept their counsel and exit the Senate race.”

Akin’s comments about “legitimate rape” and abortion have been drawing outrage from both sides of the aisle, with many members of his own party urging him to drop out. During a Monday night appearance on CNN, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus even said he’d prefer that Akin not attend the party’s convention next week.
