We Dare You Not To Cry: Boston Bruins Surprise Parents With Son Serving In Afghanistan

How do you make 20,000 screaming hockey fans each have to explain to the person standing next to them that, “a little dust just got in my eye,” or that they were, “just fixing my contact lens”? By pulling off one of the most awesome “Welcome Home” stunts ever.

On Saturday, the Boston Bruins hosted the Buffalo Sabres at the TD Garden. Their special guests for the honorary puck drop were Daron and Lori Jacobs, of Pembroke, Mass., parents of Lt. Charlie Jacobs, a member of the 182nd Massaschusetts Army National Guard who had been stationed in Afghanistan for the past seven months. But as Daron and Lori made it to center ice, they learned a very special guest would be joining them to assist in the pick drop — their son, Charlie, who had decided to surprise them at the game. The crowd, already cheering loudly for the parents, went wild when Charlie was announced and made his way to center ice for the tearful reunion.

“I was just going to show up at the seat, that was my original plan,” Charlie Jacobs told WHDH after the game. The Bruins, however, found out about the plans and turned it into one of the more touching events in recent memory.
