State GOP Cancels D’Souza Event Because of That Whole Jail Thing

Conservative author and filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza has been criticizing Costco and Google for sabotaging his new book and movie, alleging that they may be part of a liberal agenda to silence him. He may have more difficulty making that claim for his latest setback.

The West Virginia GOP cancelled an upcoming event with D’Souza after his inclusion drew bipartisan complaints. D’Souza was booked to be the keynote speaker the party’s $75 a plate “Victory Dinner,” but the event was to be held days before D’Souza was due in a New York court for sentencing over a campaign finance violation. He faces up to sixteen months in jail.

“On the eve of such an exciting election year in West Virginia, we want to ensure that our dinner is an event for all conservatives to celebrate,” the state party’s chairman said of the cancellation, which came within hours of the event’s announcement.

Both Democrats and Republicans criticized D’Souza’s inclusion, including from Shelley Moore Capito, the GOP’s U.S. Senate nominee. “Neither the campaign or Shelley had any knowledge of the decision to invite D’Souza to speak nor do we agree with the invitation,” a Capito spokesperson said. “Shelley will not be attending the event and she will not allow her name to be associated with the event in any way.”
