State Troopers End Up Shooting and Killing Man After Rescuing Him

Screen Shot 2015-05-31 at 12.37.59 PMOn Saturday, Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that a man had been killed by the officers trying to rescue him and another man from a flooded road. Neither of the two officers were injured and the second man was charged with assault and public intoxication.

Captain Paul Timmons told CBS affiliate KOTV that a report came in at about 9:30 P.M. regarding a stranded vehicle approximately 20 miles south of Tulsa. The two responding officers found two men who were trying to push a vehicle through a roadway covered with rising currents.

“They were trying to get them to come out of the water. They were worried about them getting swept away,” Timmons said. “(The men), for whatever reason, were just really upset about having to leave the vehicle there.”

Timmons then said that one man attacked the officers after reaching dry land. “One of the troopers was actually assaulted, and in defense of himself, he fired,” said Timmons. “That’s been the practice of the agency when something like that occurs.” Timmons said that it would be “a matter of time” before the officers are put on leave.

There are reports that a weapon was recovered from the scene, but the details were not yet clear on who had the weapon, whether the man was shot by one or both troopers, and how many bullets were fired.
