The Less Clinton’s Book Sold, the More People Tweeted About It
Hillary Clinton’s new memoir, Hard Choices, was unsurprisingly the most talked about book on social media in the past four weeks, challenged only by J.K. Rowling’s new novel (under a pseudonym) that was the focal point of the Amazon-Hachette dispute.
Perhaps more surprising is that the references to Clinton’s book went up as its sales went down. Per the Vice President of CoverCake, which tracks literary references online, Hard Choices got a “lot of comments during its early June release and garnered even more comments at the end of the month, when it became apparent that the book was not meeting sales expectations.”
In part, that could be due to articles, like this one, about Clinton’s book allegedly underwhelming sales, which have proliferated in the past couple weeks. More likely, as the book’s revelations were largely digested within its first week of release, the mini-controversies over Clinton’s wealth overtook the discussion, morphing the book from a text to be read to a (slightly) more legitimate reason to cover Clinton than her still-non-existence presidential campaign.
