The Week Editor: It ‘Would Seem Likely’ Mueller Will Conclude Trump Obstructed Justice, Maybe More

The Week is usually known for presenting both sides of every issue with quotes from both liberal and conservative publications. As such, the magazine’s readers might have been surprised when editor-in-chief William Falk presented an unusually opinionated piece on Robert Mueller’s expanding investigation on President Donald Trump.
Falk most recent editor’s letter reflected on how 2017 has challenged his sense of optimism after being one of the “strangest, most tumultuous, and most disorienting years in our history.” Falk lamented how excessive politicization has torn the country apart, writing that “never in my lifetime, even in the 1960s, has the country felt so fractured — so close to a civil war.”
But most interestingly, Falk predicted that the country will face its greatest test when the Russia special counsel presents its evidence and shows that the president is guilty of obstructing justice.
In the coming year, Special Counsel Robert Mueller would seem likely to conclude that President Trump obstructed justice in the Russia investigation. Mueller may point to other high crimes and misdemeanors as well. It’s impossible to predict how Congress and the nation will respond — or what will happen if Trump decides to fire Mueller — except that what follows will be convulsive. Our democracy will be sorely tested; in the crucible, we will discover whether character, decency, truth, and the rule of law still matter. I’d like to think we will pass the test.
Yes, The Week editorials occasionally have some edge but this was a pretty sweeping prediction buried in a short editorial, in a magazine known for moderation.
