Dave Weigel Has More Work Than Ever Now That He’s Joining Slate
Defying the advice that it’s better to look for a job while employed, David Weigel is adding Slate to his growing list of jobs after resigning from the Washington Post at the beginning of the Journolist scandal.
In addition to his already announced work for MSNBC, Weigel is now under a one-year contact with WaPo’s corporate sibling Slate to be a political reporter and start a new politics blog, The Upshot’s Michael Calderone is reporting and Weigel confirmed in a tweet.
Weigel came out of the WaPo dust-up looking pretty good, all things considering, and most assumed he would land on his feet because he was always considered a top talent. The early rumor was that Weigel was headed to Huffington Post after he was spotted in their D.C. offices licking his wounds after his resignation.
In the month since his resignation, Weigel has been busy writing for Slate and also doing a well-received week substituting for Andrew Sullivan.
Slate is perceived as a left-of-center outfit where there is little confusion over traditional journalism versus online personality, the dilemma that hurt Weigel at the WaPo. They expect their writers–including David Plotz, Jacob Weisberg, Emily Bazelon, William Saletan, John Dickerson, and Dahlia Lithwick–to have personalities and viewpoints and Weigel’s willingness to be interesting and provocative even if it occasionally bothers people will be viewed as a plus instead of a liability.
