UNC Confederate Memorial Vandalized with ‘Black Lives Matter,’ ‘KKK’
A memorial to Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War on University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s campus was defaced over the weekend with the words “KKK,” “murderer,” and “Black Lives Matter.”
The memorial depicted a Confedate soldier, popularly known as “Silent Sam” on campus, and is dedicated to the 300-odd UNC alumni who fought and died for the Confederacy. Damage to the memorial is estimated at over $1,000.

“We understand that the issue of race and place is both emotional and, for many, painful. Carolina is working hard to ensure we have a thoughtful, respectful and inclusive dialogue on the issue,” the university said in a statement. “…We welcome all points of view, but damaging or defacing statues is not the way to go about it.
