Washington Post Editorial Board Calls on Trump to Pass Gun Control: ‘End This American Carnage’
The Washington Post is making an an appeal to President Trump and Congress in the hope that the Las Vegas Shooting will lead to serious action for gun control.
Over the weekend, the paper’s editorial board released a video where they lamented the tragic frequency of American mass casualty events throughout the last few years. The columnists said that if Trump wants to live up to his inauguration promise to end “American carnage,” he can start by standing up to the gun lobby and passing legislation to prevent more mass shootings.
The team acknowledged conservative criticisms against gun control, but they argued nonetheless that it does not excuse Congress from rejecting every legislative proposal on the matter since the Sandy Hook Massacre. The board also noted how often lawmakers use shootings in order to talk about immigration, terrorism and mental health, but never guns.
“President Trump called the Vegas massacre ‘an act of pure evil.’ Can we not summon the moral courage now to prevent another one? When will we decide it is enough?”
The video closes by listing the victims of every mass shooting since the 1966 University of Texas tower shooting.
