Watch John Oliver Go on a Rant Against Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Almost Calling Him A ‘Feckless C*nt’
Look, every now and then we’ve all wanted to yell at Neil DeGrasse Tyson for being so even-keeled and science-y, but there are limits.
John Oliver almost crossed the line on Sunday when he was discussing guardianship law on Last Week Tonight. Oliver was discussing how a guardian billed 100 work hours a day, which he pointed out was impossible “unless she was working on the planet Mercury, where, as we all know, each day lasts 1407 Earth hours.”
“I’ll be honest, that’s a joke exclusively designed for Neil DeGrasse Tyson,” he added. “I do hope you enjoyed it, Dr. Tyson, ’cause absolutely nobody else did.”
Cut to a clip of Tyson explaining that Oliver’s joke was scientifically inaccurate, and that the time Oliver gave was the rotation of Mercury, which isn’t the same as a “day.”
“A day on Mercury would be sunrise to sunrise, of course,” Tyson explained. “And on Mercury, that lasts three times longer than what you just gave.”
“Shut up Neil! Shut up!” Oliver cried in response. “Why do you have to ruin everything? Just enjoy something for once in your f—ing life! What is wrong with you, you feckless– ah, never mind. It’s not worth it. It’s not worth it. Bad idea.”
Of course, Oliver was referring to the remark Samantha Bee made on her show about Ivanka Trump that prompted major backlash. Oliver and Bee were colleagues at The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.
