WATCH LIVE: President Trump Announces Decision on Paris Climate Agreement
President Trump will deliver remarks from the White House Rose Garden at 3:00 p.m. EST today, where he is expected to announce his final decision regarding the Paris climate accord.
Ever since Trump’s first tour abroad, there has been a great deal of renewed intrigue about whether the president would recommit America to the international pledge to reduce global warming. Trump said that he would officially make his choice on Thursday, though it has been suggested that he will break away from the Paris Agreement.
Pulling away from efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is expected to have significant repercussions on diplomacy between America and the other 194 participating nations. Aside from Syria and Nicaragua, every nation has is connected to the environmental accord, which permits countries to set their own goals and plans for reducing carbon emissions.
In the past, Trump has complained about how the agreement has impacted the U.S. economy and the energy industry. Reuters notes that Trump previously promised to walk away from the agreement within the first 100 days of his presidency.
Trump’s fellow G7 leaders have asked him to remain in the pact, and the president has reportedly met with several of his advisors to discuss whether he ought to stay with it. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk says that he will leave the White House’s advisory council if Trump decides to go ahead with the withdrawal.
