Nike, on Wednesday, rolled out a two-minute ad featuring Colin Kaepernick — the first commercial featuring the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback since the company announced his endorsement deal earlier this week.
“If people say your dreams are crazy, if they laugh at what you think you can do, good. Stay that way,” Kaepernick said in the ad — which he posted to his Twitter account. “What non-believers fail to understand is that calling a dream crazy is not an insult, it’s a compliment.”
The ad goes on to display a montage of athletes working to pursue their dreams despite the obstacles they face. Several superstar athletes make cameos throughout the video, including LeBron James and Serena Williams.
“Don’t ask if your dreams are crazy, ask if they’re crazy enough,” Kaepernick says. The video concludes with the message, “it’s only crazy until you do it. Just do it.”
Nike’s decision to have Kaepernick — the face of the NFL protests against social injustice and police brutality during the National Anthem — help commemorate the 30th anniversary of their famous slogan has drawn applause and condemnation from various corners across the country. ESPN reports that the ad will air during NBC’s broadcast of this season’s NFL opener Thursday night between the defending Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons.
