WATCH: This Crazy Utah Field Goal Made Fox’s Gus Johnson Positively Giddy
One of the saddest developments in all of sports broadcasting over the past decade was when Gus Johnson left CBS to sign a deal with Fox Sports in 2011. That meant the end of the perfect pairing of Johnson — whose signature over-the-top calls are the stuff of legend — and March Madness, pound-for-pound the most exciting sporting event of all.
At Fox, he’s been stuck doing, mostly, a bunch of minor college football games like Wednesday night’s Foster Farms bowl between Utah and Indiana.
But every now and then, something cool happens in one of those games that inspires Johnson to give us one of those wonderful, exuberant calls and remind us how great he can be.
In the Foster Farms Bowl, Utah kicker Andy Phillips tried a field goal from 48 yards out. The kick had some wild spin out it, swerving in and out before ultimately curling inside the left upright.
Johnson was giddy.
“WHOA!” Johnson said. “That looks like your 7-iron!”
“Look at the action on this, folks! In, out, and back in!”
As ever, there is no one who calls a ballgame quite like Gus Johnson. Watch above, via Fox.
