In video released by the Tallahassee Police, police officer Terry Mahan is seen tasering a sixty-two year old woman as she attempted to walk away, an action for which he was suspended Wednesday. The incident was caught by a neighbor on a camera phone, and Tallahassee police released the video to YouTube.
The incident occurred after two others had been arrested on the block. According to Tallahassee police, Viola Young was told to stay back after she had approached a police car to ask what was happening. When told she was under arrest Young began to walked away.
That’s when Mahan tased her. In the video she can be seen collapsing and writhing on the pavement.
“They done tased a lady for nothing,” the neighbor filming the incident is heard to say. “They wonder why they’re hated.”
“Viola Young caused me to take my focus off of one of the arrestees and engage her,” Mahan said, according to court documents. “Young’s actions obstructed officers while in the course of completing their legal duties.”
“Based on the video, I have enough concerns to call for an internal investigation and have put Officer Mahan on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation,” said Police Chief Michael DeLeo. “We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. We want to be transparent with the community by sharing what we can at this point, including the video.”
