‘Well That’s OVER-whelming’: Watch NBC’s Al Michaels Pull Some Crazy Gambling Voodoo on Sunday Night’s Game

Longtime followers of NBC football broadcaster Al Michaels know that the man has a penchant for being acutely aware of the point spread in games he is announcing — as well as the over/under total. Often times, he will make casual references to those numbers, just to let viewers know he’s paying attention.

Well, on Sunday night, Michaels pulled some sort of crazy gambling voodoo on the proceedings — to the delight of some, and the dismay of others.

As the final seconds ticked away on the Green Bay Packers’ victory over the Detroit Lions, the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt. Detroit had the ball on Green Bay’s 35 yard line, but they trailed by two touchdowns with just 22 seconds remaining.

Still, Michaels knew there was one matter yet to be decided: The over/under. The teams had combined for 48 points. The over was 49.5.

“Well, what do we got here?” Michaels said, seemingly to himself. “We got 31-17. Mmm…just a little bit under where some folks would like to see this one wind up. But…so be it.”

Just then, Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford fired a Hail Mary to the end zone. And somehow, Lions wide receiver Anquan Boldin came down with it, for a touchdown.

“Well that’s over-whelming,” Michaels said, wryly.

Some folks on Twitter were elated with the miracle victory.

While others were not as pleased.
