‘Why is He Silent on That?’: Wolf Blitzer Grills GOP Senator Over Trump’s Silence on Russian Aggression
While interviewing Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) today, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer pushed the Republican lawmaker to explain why President Donald Trump has been quiet on recent aggressive actions made by the Russians.
Highlighting that Trump quickly made a public statement following North Korea’s missile launch, Blitzer wondered aloud why the president has yet to say anything regarding a Russian ship being spotted off the East Coast, the country launching a cruise missile, and Russian planes buzzing a US destroyer.
“I’m not in a position to question what he’s saying,” Blunt responded before pivoting to discussing the need for Trump to get a new national security adviser he has confidence in.
Blitzer wasn’t willing to let the GOP senator off the hook though.
“But, Senator, you know, he’s got time to do all sorts of tweeting, make all sorts of statements,” the CNN anchor said. “He is silent when it comes to these Russian aggressive moves right now. So, why is he silent on that? If you take a look at his Twitter feed, he’s got plenty of time to tweet about all sorts of other issues.”
“You know, you’d have to ask him, Wolf,” Blunt replied. “I don’t know.” The Missouri Republican then highlighted that U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley had recently made strong statements against Russia.
“But why is he silent on these issues?” Blitzer doggedly inquired. “I assume you want him to speak out when Russia does these kinds of things.”
“Well, I think you’d have to ask him why he’s silent,” Blunt answered. “I think the Russians are a clear adversary and a dangerous adversary, and we need to view them that way.”
