‘So Cynical and Irresponsible’: Liz Cheney Hammers GOP For Considering to Leave the Border Open So Trump Can Run On Immigration

Ex-Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) tore into Congressional Republicans on Thursday for appearing to bow to pressure from former President Donald Trump on a border security deal.
“If it’s true that McConnell said, you know, basically, you know, we thought we had a deal, but now it looks like, you know, Trump’s going to be the nominee and he wants to run on this. I mean, that that is so cynical and irresponsible,” Cheney said on Pod Save America.
Cheney was reacting to news from Wednesday night that Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told his fellow GOP senators that “when we started this, the border united us and Ukraine divided us.”
“The politics on this have changed,” McConnell added, noting that Trump wants to run on the border being open and “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him.”
“And, you know, surprising, frankly, we all know how dangerous this situation is at the border. I think, you know, as I said, the Biden administration, you know, deserves real criticism for the fact that they haven’t secured the border,” Cheney continued, concluding:
But now for the Republicans, the Republican leader, to be saying, well, we’re not going to take any action because Trump doesn’t want us to. You know, that that just, I think, confirms what everybody’s frustrations are about, about politics today and is just really, really cynical and sad that that’s the position they’re taking.
Reports as of Thursday afternoon show that a border deal may still be happening, despite Trump’s pressure to stop it.
