Andrea Mitchell Doubts Her Own Network’s Poll Is Totally ‘Accurate,’ Speculates Biden Enthusiasm ‘Bigger Than We Think’

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell speculated on Wednesday that her own network’s polling may not accurately reflect the “enthusiasm” for President Joe Biden in November’s election.

During a Super Tuesday discussion about exit polling, network senior political editor Mark Murray argued a significant amount of Nikki Haley voters could be more open to voting for Biden than Donald Trump. He noted 51% of Haley voters in Virginia said they approve of Biden’s job as president.

“That result [leads] me to think that maybe that five point spread in the New York Times poll and our poll on the head-to-head matchup is not quite accurate,” Mitchell said. “Maybe the enthusiasm for Joe Biden is, as their campaign has been claiming, bigger than we think once it’s a binary choice.”

A New York Times/Siena College poll released this month showed Trump leading Biden 48% to 43%. A NBC News poll released the month prior also showed Trump with a five point lead over Biden in a head-to-head matchup.

Mitchell also called third parties potentially “determinative” in November, describing them as influential in 2016. In that election, the Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson and the Green Party’s Jill Stein hit record vote counts for their parties. Neither made it past single digits nationally, but critics have long argued third party votes in swing states helped Trump in the end.

Murray argued Biden has the advantage of being an incumbent this time around, but it will still be a “competitive race.”

“President Biden is underperforming some of his benchmarks, not only with base Democratic voters, but also voters in the middle of the electorate and how is the time for him to actually start trying to bring those people back into the fold,” he said.
