AOC and Other Democrats Join Republican’s Effort To Prevent U.S. Attack on Iran: ‘Signing On’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) lent her support to a resolution authored by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) that would prohibit U.S. involvement in Israel’s attacks on Iran.

Israel launched a wave of airstrikes against Iran last week, killing top military officials and nuclear scientists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed for years that Iran is on the verge of getting nuclear weapons. Iran responded with a series of missile strikes of its own. The U.S. assisted the Israelis in shooting down several of them.

On Monday, President Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Canada a day early to head back to the White House, where he ordered the National Security Council to convene in the Situation Room. Shortly before, the president fired off a cryptic post on Truth Social telling the 10 million inhabitants of Tehran to “immediately evacuate.”

As tensions escalated on Monday night, Massie announced he will introduce a resolution on Tuesday meant to prevent U.S. intervention:

This is not our war.

But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution.

I’m introducing a bipartisan War Powers Resolution tomorrow to prohibit our involvement.

I invite all members of Congress to cosponsor this resolution.

The tweet got the attention of a few Democratic members of Congress, who expressed support, including Ocasio-Cortez.

Meanwhile, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (R-MI) also said she will sign on.

As did Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA).

Over in the Senate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced his own resolution.

“Another war in the Middle East could cost countless lives, waste trillions more dollars, and lead to even more deaths, more conflict, and more displacement,” he wrote, calling a war with Iran “illegal.”

Israel’s first strikes on Iran came just two days before Trump’s envoy to the Middle East was scheduled to meet Iranian officials in Oman for negotiations. The U.S. and Israel have long been concerned about Iran’s civilian nuclear program, which Israel says Iran is intent on using to make nuclear weapons.
