The first round of voting has concluded and Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) failed in his first push to become Speaker of the House.

Jordan was nominated by the House Republican Caucus after they originally nominated House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) over the House Judiciary Committee chairman. Scalise withdrew his bid after determining he didn’t have enough votes to secure the speakership, and there was a great deal of skepticism that Jordan would get enough votes either.

Political observers estimated that if Democrats all voted for Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Jordan would only be able to afford the loss of four GOP votes for his bid to succeed. Twenty of Jordan’s Republican colleagues wound up voting against him, and The Dispatch’s Haley Byrd Wilt compiled a list of the holdouts.
