Democratic Strategist Advises Party Not to Tout Trump’s Convictions Too Much: ‘I’m Not Very Interested in Mr. Trump’s Personal Problems’

CNN political commentator and Democratic consultant Paul Begala said it would be ill-advised for his party to fixate on the fact that Donald Trump is a convicted felon.

The former president was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments he made during the 2016 campaign. Trump sought to suppress word of his extramarital affairs, lest they became a campaign issue. He is also under indictment in three other jurisdictions over his attempt to overturn the 2020 election and his retention of government documents after leaving office.

During Thursday’s OutFront on CNN, guest host Brianna Keilar said that many Americans appear unmoved by the fact that Trump was convicted last week.

“Paul, what do Democrats do when it seems many Americans – and I know there’s certainly a question about if enough care – but many of them, they just don’t seem to care that Trump is a felon,” she said.

“Right,” Begala replied. “And I think that’s why the Democrats have to make this about your life, not Donald Trump’s. I mean, it’s always, you know, I was politically raised by Bill Clinton and he would always say, you know, elections are about the voters’ lives, not ours. And Democrats need to take this to that message, of, ‘We’re here for you.'”

Begala went on to state that he does not care about Trump’s extramarital affairs and that Democrats would be better served by focusing on Trump’s policies.

“He was in bed with big oil,” he continued. “There’s been reporting that he met with all the big oil executives, asked them for $1 billion, and told them in exchange for that he waived all of our environmental laws for them. Now, that’s something that affects you and me. So, I’m not very interested in Mr. Trump’s personal problems. I’m interested in the lives and families of the American people.”
