Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) did not hesitate to point a finger of blame at Democrats for the death of Charlie Kirk, saying that they “own this, one hundred percent.”

The 31-year-old Turning Point USA founder was speaking at an event at Utah Valley University Wednesday when the shooting occurred. Video taken by students attending his speech show Kirk appearing to have been shot in the neck after the sound of a single gunshot was heard.

News of the shooting shocked politicians and commentators on both sides of the aisle, who offered prayers for his family and condemnations of political violence. Kirk was rushed to a local hospital but died from his injuries.

Mace was spoke to reporters on Capitol Hill Wednesday about the shooting, and began by blaming Democrats. Note that this exchange seems to have occurred before the news of Kirk’s death was confirmed.

“I’m going to say this,” said Mace. “Democrats own what happened today.”

“I am devastated,” she continued. “My kids have called, panicking — probably all the kids of every conservative in the country called panicking — just because you speak your mind on an issue doesn’t mean you get shot.”

“Then by that logic, do Republicans own the shooting of the two Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota,” asked NBC News chief Capitol Hill correspondent Ryan Nobles. “Isn’t this on both sides?”

“Are you kidding me?!” Mace replied angrily.

“No, I’m asking a serious question,” said Nobles.

“We don’t know what condition Charlie Kirk is in right now,” said Mace. “Some raging leftist lunatic put a bullet through his neck, and you want to talk about Republicans right now? No! No, not at all!”

“No, I’m asking you — you said the Democrats have to own it, but I’m asking you –” said Nobles.

“No, this is on — the Democrats own this. Democrats own this.” Mace interjected.

“But isn’t there a problem with political violence across the spectrum?” Nobles asked.

“Yeah, we’re talking about Charlie Kirk right now,” retorted Mace. “That’s the subject of this, that we’re talking about right now. Democrats own this, one hundred percent.”
