White House Deputy Press Secretary and Senior Communications Adviser Andrew Bates took aim at the New York Times this week after the storied publication jabbed President Joe Biden for not mentioning the paper’s recent poll while hyping funding for rail projects during a speech in Delaware.
“President Biden, perhaps Amtrak’s most famous advocate, announced $16.4 billion in funding for rail projects on Monday, exhibiting a business-as-usual approach as polls show him trailing former President Donald J. Trump one year before Election Day,” opened the article by Lisa Friedman and Mark Walker.
“Speaking at a maintenance warehouse where Amtrak trains are serviced in Bear, Del., Mr. Biden made no mention of the polling from The New York Times and Siena College polls,” added the article’s second line, oddly suggesting that Biden’s reelection campaign should inherently be fused with his domestic policy initiatives.
Bates pulled no punches in saying exactly how he felt about the article, writing, “Peerless, ortolan bird-grade unintentional satire. PERFECT. Just overflowing with embarrassing, clueless vanity.”
Bates then tagged the satirical New York Times Pitchbot account and added, “@DougJBalloon, look at this shit! ‘President doesn’t cancel event because of our poll’ hahaha. Tip of the hat to @LFFriedman and @bymarkwalker. Tastes INCREDIBLE.”
The recent New York Times Siena College poll, which came out on Sunday found Biden losing to former President Donald Trump in several key swing states by wide margins:
The results show Mr. Biden losing to Mr. Trump, his likeliest Republican rival, by margins of four to 10 percentage points among registered voters in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Mr. Biden is ahead only in Wisconsin, by two percentage points, the poll found.
The poll sparked headlines across the media reporting on panic within the Democratic Party and grumblings over whether or not Biden should seek reelection.
