Embattled Dem Senator Menendez Attacks Biden DOJ in Wild Senate Floor Screed: They’re Engaged in a ‘Persecution’

Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) took to the Senate floor Tuesday and railed against the federal prosecution he faces for his alleged bribery scheme involving the Egyptian and Qatari governments.

For months, Menendez, his wife, and his associates have been dealing with federal corruption charges for allegedly taking bribes while advancing the interests of Egypt. The senator’s legal troubles compounded last week as new charges accused Menendez of accepting more gifts while using his position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to further Qatar’s interests.

In an unusual move, Menendez responded to Southern District of New York’s superseding indictment on Tuesday by questioning the timing of the accusations and the rollout of the government’s charges.

It allows the government to keep this sensational story in the press, it poisons the jury pool, and it seeks to convict me in the court of public opinion. In so doing, the government’s tactics harm not just me, but each of you, my colleagues, the political establishment, and most importantly, the electorate of New Jersey.

These sensationalized allegations are now creating a rising call for my resignation despite my innocence, and before a single piece of evidence has been introduced in a court of law. The United States Attorney’s Office has engaged not in a prosecution, but a persecution. They seek a victory, not justice.
