Fox’s Chad Pergram Reports the ‘Government Likely Closes Tonight’

Chad Pergram, Fox News’ senior congressional correspondent, joined Bill Hemmer on America’s Newsroom Tuesday to discuss the looming government shutdown, which Pergram predicted is likely to happen at midnight.

“Chad Pergram, tell us where we are and where we’re headed,” began Hemmer.

“Midnight is the deadline. There are no backchannel talks, and that means the government likely closes tonight. A meeting between President [Donald] Trump and top congressional leaders went nowhere yesterday. The president was asked about the depth of federal layoffs,” Pergram replied, before playing a clip of Trump’s earlier statements:

We made you a law. They want to open the wall again. Can you believe it? I can’t even believe it. They wanna open the walls. They haven’t taken away boys playing in women’s sports. They have done that. Men playing in women’s sports. It’s like they don’t change. They lost an election in a landslide, and they don’t change.

“Democrats are concerned that a shutdown could trigger mass firings of federal workers. Some Democrats say it doesn’t matter if the government closes. That’s because the administration already eliminated portions of the federal workforce,” Pergram added before playing a clip of Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) in which she said:

Elon Musk coming in here, throwing everybody out of their jobs illegally. Like, I mean, that was a real problem. He didn’t ask for Congress to stay open or whether or not we were shut down. They were doing illegal things. We know what they will do because they have already done it so much.

“Democrats say they’re not asking for anything the president mentioned, but they do want money to defray the cost of Obamacare. They also demand an ironclad promise that President Trump won’t cancel spending already approved by Congress. Now, the Senate takes another vote tonight to break a filibuster on an interim spending bill okayed by the House. Again, the deadline is midnight tonight,” Pergram concluded.
