GOP Senator Bashes Trump for Associating with ‘Crazy Conspiracy Theorist’ Laura Loomer: A ‘DNC Plant’ Couldn’t Hurt Him More

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) sharply criticized former President Donald Trump over his association with Laura Loomer, bashing her as a “crazy conspiracy theorist” who was damaging Trump’s re-election chances.

Loomer flew with Trump to Philadelphia for Tuesday’s debate with Vice President Kamala Harris and then accompanied him to a 9/11 memorial event Wednesday. The far-right activist has a long history of making anti-semitic and bigoted comments, and has even promoted baseless 9/11 conspiracies. Just this week alone, she has said the White House would “smell like curry” if Harris wins, threatened to “expose” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) after she criticized Loomer, made homophobic attacks about Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and peddled 9/11 conspiracies again.

At the debate moderated by ABC News’s David Muir and Linsey Davis on Tuesday, Trump dropped a number of unfounded and untrue claims and rants, including saying pet-eating migrants were terrorizing an Ohio town and Democrats support post-birth abortion and were at fault for the assassination attempt. He also claimed that President Joe Biden “hates” Harris and “can’t stand her,” backtracked on his confession he lost the 2020 election, and got a lot of criticism throughout the debate even from the right.

A lot of that criticism noted how Loomer has been very obviously in close proximity to Trump recently, and blamed her influence for some of his more outlandish debate moments.

Tillis, North Carolina’s senior senator, pulled no punches in his assessment of Loomer’s negative effect on the GOP ticket.

“Laura Loomer is a crazy conspiracy theorist who regularly utters disgusting garbage intended to divide Republicans,” wrote Tillis. “A DNC plant couldn’t do a better job than she is doing to hurt President Trump’s chances of winning re-election. Enough.”

Loomer responded with a lengthy post deliberately misspelling Tillis’s name as “Thom Thillis” and calling him a “RINO” and among the “enemies to our country and enemies to MAGA.”

Tillis “IS the DNC plant he accuses me of being,” she wrote.

Tillis is no stranger to criticizing other Republicans. He has dunked on Tucker Carlson for being a “useful idiot” for the Kremlin when he posted a video lauding a Russian grocery store, blasted Greene for being a “total waste of time” who was hurting the GOP by “dragging our brand down” with her antics regarding Ukraine and Israel aid bills.

He also scorched his fellow Republicans who killed the bipartisan border security bill at Trump’s request, called a claim by Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) that lawmakers wanted to fund Ukraine aid by cutting Social Security “total and unmitigated bullshit,” and assisted the successful effort to oust controversial former Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-NC) from Congress, endorsing his primary opponent.
