Hakeem Jeffries Says ‘A Lot Of People’ Would Be ‘Very Interested’ In Andrew Cuomo Running For NYC Mayor

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) claimed that “a lot of people” would be “very interested” in former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) — who resigned from that post in 2021 — running for NYC mayor.

Cuomo appears positioned to enter the mayoral race after months of speculation that he will use the election to relaunch his political career. For over a decade Cuomo served as New York’s governor before having to resign over allegations of sexual harassment from multiple women, as well as criticism over his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The New York lawmaker told Jeffries told Spectrum News NY1 on Wednesday that he looks forward to speaking with Cuomo “sooner rather than later” if he does decide to enter the mayoral race to replace Eric Adams.

“I think he’d be a candidate that a lot of people, as I’ve heard from the district that I represent, would be very interested in checking out,” Jeffries said. The top Democrat did note that he has not talked with Cuomo about the issue as of yet.

Jeffries joined other New York lawmakers in Congress in calling for Cuomo to resign from office back in 2021. So far, Cuomo as received the endorsement from notable New York Democrats, including Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY), who also called for him to resign as governor.
