Congressional Democrats are grousing about Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) after the lawmaker forced a vote on the articles of impeachment he introduced against President Donald Trump.

Late last month, Thanedar introduced seven articles of impeachment against Trump on various charges, including obstruction, abuse of trade powers, violation of First Amendment rights, and bribery. On Tuesday, Thanedar forced a vote on the measure, which is sure to fail in the Republican-controlled House. Democrats are especially annoyed that by forcing a vote, some members in more liberal districts may feel compelled to vote in favor even though they may believe the move is politically inane.

According to a report by Axios on Tuesday, several House Democrats believe Thanedar’s articles are a gambit to help him win a contested Democratic primary next year. Under House rules, Republicans now have until Thursday to take up the measure. The House GOP is expected to set a vote on whether to table it.

“People are pissed,” one senior House Democrat told Axios.

“This is the dumbest f***ing thing,” said another Democratic lawmaker. “Utterly selfish behavior.”

Another House Democrat said, “What a dumbs***.”

Yet another called Thanedar’s effort “a waste of f***ing time.”

Thanedar, 70, is facing a primary challenge from state Rep. Donovan McKinney, who has secured an endorsement from Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) in next year’s election.

Trump was impeached twice in his first term by a Democratic-controlled House. The first was in December 2019 after Trump withheld aid to Ukraine and demanded that President Volodymyr Zelensky open an investigation into the Biden family. Just over a year later, Trump was impeached again after inspiring the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot. He was acquitted in both cases by the Senate, which failed to muster the two-thirds necessary to convict.
