Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville said he had hoped President Joe Biden would not run for re-election against Donald Trump.
During a Sunday interview on WABC radio’s The Cats Roundtable, Carville, who famously worked for President Bill Clinton in 1992, also noted that he believes Biden and Trump’s old ages will disenfranchise younger party voters from participating in the upcoming November election.
“It isn’t the choice I was crazy about,” Carville said, according to the New York Post. “I thought that President Biden should not run for re-election…But he did — it’s him and Trump — and that’s where I am.”
According to Real Clear Politics, Biden and Trump are currently neck and neck in nationally polling with Trump maintaining a slight lead in multiple swing state elections. Both men are the two oldest candidates to run for the Oval Office with Biden at the age of 81 and Trump set to turn 78 in a few days.
“The lack of enthusiasm among young people for public policy and public service and being involved in the public square is quite disheartening,” Carville said. “I can understand it on one level. I’ve talked to them, and they feel like a lot of things are not working for them.
“They feel like two 80-year-old guys don’t mean much to them. I am really afraid that we are going to lose the generation of young people…That’s my greatest fear for the United States, that young people are disengaging,” he added
Moreover, Carville argued that Democrats have enough of a talent pool who would attract and engage with younger voters better tahn Biden, such as House Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY)
“There’s so much talent, and a lot of it is young and vigorous and energetic,” the veteran political strategist noted. “I think Hakeem Jeffries is doing a great job… as [House] leader.”
